YouTube Hooks & Scripts — Long-Form Content

Transform raw ideas, braindumps, and code into compelling scripts that hook viewers in the first 30 seconds and keep them watching through long-form content.

Core Philosophy: Engagement Arc

Technical and educational YouTube content fails when it teaches instead of tells. Viewers click for transformation.

Hook (Promise) → Tension (Stakes) → Journey (Discovery) → Payoff (Transformation)

Before Writing — Extract These Four Things

From any input (transcript, notes, braindump, code), identify:

  1. Core Insight — what's the one thing that made YOU excited?
  2. Transformation — how is the viewer different after watching?
  3. Stakes — why does this matter now? Cost of not knowing?
  4. Journey — what discoveries will the viewer make?

Hook Formulas (First 30 Seconds)

The hook makes a contract. The rest of the video must deliver on that exact promise.

Pattern Interrupt

"If you're still [wrong behavior], you're [consequence]."

Curiosity Gap

"I [achieved result] and here's what nobody tells you..."

Controversial Take

"Stop [common advice]. Here's what actually works."

Identity Call-Out

"This is for [specific person] who [specific situation]..."

Question Hook

"Why do [surprising thing] when you could [better alternative]?"

Result Lead

"[Company] went from [before] to [after]. Here's how."

Script Structure (Long-Form)

[HOOK — 0:00-0:30]
Promise + stakes. Never recap what's coming — create desire for it.

[TENSION — 0:30-2:00]
Why this matters now. What goes wrong if they don't know this.

[JOURNEY — 2:00-end-2min]
The discovery process. Reveal, don't explain. Each section should
make the viewer want the next section.

[PAYOFF]
Transformation. The viewer after watching vs before.

[CTA]
Specific, not generic. What to do next.

Pacing Guidelines

| Duration | Words | Pace | |----------|-------|------| | 5 min | 800-1,000 | Tight, punchy | | 10 min | 1,600-2,000 | Conversational | | 20 min | 3,200-4,000 | Room to breathe | | 30 min | 4,800-6,000 | Storytelling pace |

Rule of thumb: 2.5-3 words per second for natural delivery.

Section-Level Rules

Each chapter/section must:

  1. Stand alone — answer a distinct search query independently (Google surfaces chapters)
  2. Hook at the start — why is this section important?
  3. End with a bridge — why does the next section matter?

Name chapters using keyword phrases people actually search, not clever titles.

Common Mistakes

| Mistake | Fix | |---------|-----| | Long intro before value | State value prop in first 15 seconds | | Formal/documentary tone | Write how you actually talk | | Explaining instead of revealing | Show the discovery, guide the journey | | Vague CTA | Specific next step with reason | | Intro recap | Viewers know what they clicked — skip the recap |

Script Quality Check

  • [ ] Hook makes a concrete promise in first 30 seconds
  • [ ] Stakes are established before solution
  • [ ] Each section has its own hook
  • [ ] Written in conversational voice (read aloud test)
  • [ ] CTA is specific
  • [ ] Chapters are labeled with searchable keyword phrases
